Description
Lūcius Tarquinius Prīscus is the fifth of a beginner-level series of Latin novellas. The story follows Lucumō, the son of a wealthy Corinthian immigrant to the Etruscan town of Tarquinii, and his wife Tanaquil through their move to Rome and his campaigning to be elected king of Rome. Once renamed and elected as the fifth monarch of the city, Lūcius Tarquinius Prīscus embarks on wars with surrounding Latin cities and a building program in Rome. This account is based on the work of the ancient Roman historian Titus Līvius, also called Livy.
Topics covered include Roman government, religion, horse racing, warfare, games, architecture, and the hills of the city of Rome. Grammatical structures introduced through their use in the story include future tense verbs and the demonstrative pronouns hic, haec, hoc (this) and ille, illa, illud (that).
This workbook includes an extensive selection of exercises composed according to Communicative Language Teaching principles, the Natural Method, which is also called the Direct Method, and Grammar Translation. The hope is to make the novella accessible and fruitful for a variety of learners.
